International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHCAP) published a new book in the Living Heritage Series – Traditional Musical Instruments: Sharing Experiences from the Field in collaboration with #HeritageAlive of the ICH NGO Forum in November 2021. From the series started since the publication of Traditional Medicine in 2017, UNESCO-ICHCAP has annually published volumes in this series to raise the visibility and viability of intangible cultural heritage worldwide.

Proven from long history, music shares thoughts and emotions among community members who play the instruments and enjoy it. Additionally, diverse intangible cultural heritage related to music includes crafts skills as musical instruments, oral traditions as lyrics, and performing arts as artwork. Giving attention to Living Heritage, we are trying to capture social contexts related to music, focusing on safeguarding activities particularly.

This book was made with contributions of fifteen writers from countries across the globe. The authors describe the current status of traditional music and provide insight on how to revitalize these traditions based on the 2003 Convention.

UNESCO-ICHCAP, with the ICH NGO Forum’s #HeritageAlive will hold a commemoration event for the publication at the 16th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage to be held at UNESCO Headquarters (Paris, France).

Music will be released on 15 December, through QR Code inside the book.
