The new priority on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in formal and non-formal education is gaining ground thanks to strong collaboration between the Culture and Education Sectors at UNESCO. Several field offices have now launched concrete activities on living heritage and education, including the UNESCO Office in Tashkent.
From 16 to 19 July 2019, a ‘National Seminar for Secondary School Teachers on Integration of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Formal and Non-formal Education’ was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The aim of the seminar was to introduce teachers to possible approaches for using intangible cultural heritage in teaching and learning activities and build their capacity to integrate intangible cultural heritage in education. It drew on approaches and materials developed during the UNESCO project ‘Promotion of intangible cultural heritage among educators to strengthen education for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region’.
The seminar was organized by the UNESCO Office in Tashkent in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, with plans to follow up with pilot activities in schools.
