New momentum to enhance ICH safeguarding capacities in Central Asia

From 19 to 23 June 2017, Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) is hosting a ‘sub-regional training workshop for facilitators for Central Asia’. UNESCO is organizing the workshop in the framework of its capacity-building programme for the effective implementation of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, and as a follow-up to a previous three-year capacity-building project that it implemented in Central Asia.

The workshop will bring together a group of twenty trainees from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, UNESCO Culture specialists from the Field Offices in Tashkent and Almaty, and the Secretariat of the Convention from UNESCO Headquarters. It aims to equip a group of participants from these countries with the necessary knowledge and methodologies to conduct effective training workshops in Central Asia on implementing the Convention.

The workshop will take stock of the experience gained in implementing capacity building in Central Asia, introduce participants to the contents and pedagogy of the capacity-building curriculum, and address the use and adaptation of capacity-building materials. It will also provide a unique opportunity to learn about the methodology developed by UNESCO on developing intangible cultural heritage safeguarding plans and to discuss possible ways forward for implementing the capacity-building programme in Central Asia.

This training workshop has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the International Training Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (CRIHAP) and in collaboration with the National Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic for UNESCO.
