11th session of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee held in Ethiopia

The 11th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritages is underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital. The session began on Nov 28 and ends on Dec 2.

Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome declared the session open. UNESCO's Deputy Director General Getachew Engida, Ethiopia’s Culture and Tourism Minister Hirut Weldemariam, and the Chairman of UNESCO’s Executive Board, Michael Worbs, also spoke at the opening.

From Nov 28 to 30, those at the session adopted both the agenda of the 11th session of the Intergovernmental Committee and the summary records of the 10th session. Members also listened to an activities report by the Secretariat, stated the decision making process concerning inscription and selection of nominations and examined the reports of States Parties on the implementation of the Convention and on the current status of elements inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. They also examined nominations for inscription on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, among other tasks.

On the morning of November 30, local time, China’s submission of “The 24 Solar Terms, Knowledge of Time and Practices Developed in China Through Observation of the Sun’s Annual Motion” was successfully inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the Intergovernmental Committee. In the upcoming days, those at the session are expected to approve the 2016 work report of the Evaluation Body, examine proposals to the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices, establish the Evaluation Body for the 2017 cycle, reveal the number of files submitted for the 2017 cycle and the number of files that can be treated in the 2018 and 2019 cycles. Members are also expected to touch on other topics, such as Intangible Cultural Heritage in emergencies.
