After the opening ceremony, the lead facilitator organized ice-breaking activities. Participants introduced themselves and filled out workshop wish cards, sharing their expectations for the training. Following that, all participants conducted a SWOT analysis on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of integrating ICH safeguarding into disaster risk reduction. The morning session also included a “Living ICH Map” exercise, where participants marked their communities’ ICH elements, locations, and types of disasters on a map, and engaged in in-depth discussions on questions such as which ICH elements are most vulnerable, which have been strengthened after disasters, and whether traditional knowledge has played a role in disaster response.

Ice-breaking activity – participants share ICH elements

In the afternoon, representatives from Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) and the Ministry of Culture introduced national policies and led group discussions on disaster response cases, including the Aceh earthquake and tsunami and the disaster risk reduction of heritage sites in Yogyakarta. Over the following two days, participants will continue to learn and discuss topics such as emergency response, disaster preparedness, community recovery, livelihood revitalization, and disaster risk reduction, ultimately formulating proposals and action plans.

This workshop represents renewed cooperation between CRIHAP and the UNESCO Jakarta Office, following the Training of Trainers Capacity Building Workshop on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage for Indonesia in Jakarta (2025). It aims to strengthen capacities for safeguarding ICH in disaster contexts in Indonesia and the wider region, and to promote the integration of disaster risk reduction with ICH safeguarding.
