Workshop on the Safeguarding and Revitalization of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Face of Disasters opens in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

The Workshop on the Safeguarding and Revitalization of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Face of Disasters, jointly organized by CRIHAP and the UNESCO Jakarta Office, successfully opened on April 27, 2026, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

The three-day workshop has brought together nearly 40 participants from relevant Indonesian government departments, social organizations, community groups, and academic institutions. It features Agni Malagina, an Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) expert, as the lead facilitator, along with four local experts with extensive experience in disaster response as instructors.

At the opening ceremony, Ms. Chiba Moe, Head of Unit and Programme Specialist for Culture, UNESCO Jakarta Office, and Mr. Raden Usman Effendi, Directorate General of Cultural Diplomacy, Promotion, and Cooperation, Ministry of Culture, Republic of Indonesia, delivered opening remarks. Both speakers noted that Indonesia is in a disaster-prone region, and ICH plays a unique and vital role in disaster response and community recovery. They expressed the hope that the workshop would enhance participants’ practical capacities in safeguarding ICH in disaster contexts.
