Workshop on Documentation and Inventorying of Intangible Cultural Heritage for Sri Lanka (Second Session) held in Galle

The Second Session of the Workshop on Documentation and Inventorying of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Sri Lanka, jointly organized by the CRIHAP (International Training Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO), the China Cultural Center in Sri Lanka, and the National Library of Sri Lanka, was successfully held from September 15 to 18, 2025, in Galle, Sri Lanka.

Workshop Session

The opening ceremony featured addresses by Ni Lisheng, Director of the China Cultural Center in Sri Lanka; Bandula Harischandra, Governor of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka; Professor Prabath Jayasinghe, Secretary-General of the Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO; and W. Sunil, Director-General of the National Library of Sri Lanka. Also in attendance were officials from the Department of Culture and the Department of Arts of the Southern Province, as well as a professor from the University of Colombo. Over 50 representatives from cultural departments within the Southern Province participated in the workshop.

Workshop Session

In his opening remarks, Ni Lisheng emphasized the profound histories, vibrant cultures, and rich Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) shared by China and Sri Lanka, highlighting the significant potential for mutual learning and collaboration in the transmission, safeguarding, and sustainable development of ICH. Bandula Harischandra observed that ICH is a living heritage and expressed his hope that the training would enable participants to enhance their skills in observation, documentation, and analysis, all of which are crucial for effective inventorying. Professor Prabath Jayasinghe underscored that ICH is embedded in every aspect of life and in people's memories, making its safeguarding a matter of national importance. Mrs. S.J.H Asangika, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Culture of the Southern Province, expressed her gratitude to CRIHAP for organizing the workshop in Sri Lanka and conveyed her anticipation for future collaborative endeavors.
