Online Workshop on ICH Nomination for Indonesia kicks off
The five-day training workshop drew 20 participants from local communities, business firms, and Indonesia’s education, culture, academic and technological sectors. UNESCO-accredited ICH facilitators, Suzanne Ogge and Paritta Chalermpow Koanantakool, were invited to deliver online lectures. Their lectures focused on key concepts in the Convention and the Nomination mechanism before giving detailed analysis of some nomination cases.
Borrowing from the experiences of workshops on Joint Nomination for Southeastern countries held in 2021, they paid special attention to explaining the significance of nomination criteria for the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices.
The two facilitators pointed out that nomination is not just targeting projects that have been well kept and moved efficiently but also projects that have not had as much resources as it is important to summarize and spread the best experiences and practices in ICH safeguarding. They also reminded local officials to take into consideration the practical needs of communities during the nomination process so as to provide with effective and efficient support.
In her speech, Nguyen Thi Hien, a former member of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee, talked about the common questions arising in the nomination process and the methods to show concerted efforts made by all parties concerned for ICH safeguarding in the nomination texts, taking nomination texts submitted by State Parties to the Convention in recent years as examples.
