The Workshop on Holistic Safeguarding and Sustainable Development for ICH in Yunnan held in Dali Bai autonomous prefecture
From November 13 to 16, 2025, the Workshop on Holistic Safeguarding and Sustainable Development for ICH in Yunnan was held in Dali Bai autonomous prefecture, Yunnan province. The workshop was jointly organized by CRIHAP, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Safeguarding Centre of Yunnan Province, and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Safeguarding Centre of Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. Nearly 40 researchers and practitioners in Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) safeguarding from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), as well as prefectures, cities, districts, and counties across Yunnan province, participated in this workshop.
The workshop lasted for four days and was led by UNESCO facilitators Zhang Min and Suzanne Ogge, as well as Chinese ICH expert Bamo Qubumo. The training content included key concepts of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (hereinafter referred to as "the Convention"), the evolution of China's people-centered cultural policies for the holistic safeguarding of ICH, safeguarding practices, emerging topics, and other related sessions. During the field visit session, the three experts guided the participants in developing safeguarding plans based on local ICH elements in Yunnan province. By integrating knowledge of holistic safeguarding, the participants applied what they had learned to practical safeguarding efforts.
Through group exercises, discussions, and presentations, the participants delved into the practical aspects of developing safeguarding plans, such as element information collection and safeguarding measures. They applied these concepts to local ICH elements in Dali Bai autonomous prefecture, including the tie-dyeing techniques of the Bai people, tea customs (Three Courses Tea of the Bai people), clay sculpture, and Jia Ma art (a form of traditional woodblock printing). By engaging with the communities involved in these practices, the participants gained a clearer understanding of how to collaborate with communities in carrying out safeguarding efforts.
