The Capacity-Building Workshop on Shared Heritage Safeguarding for China and Malaysia held in Xiamen

Participants conducted field visits to Lyucuo Huazang'an Wangchuan Exhibition Hall and Xiamen Port Maritime Culture Exhibition Center, where they elaborated on their respective community practices to safeguard and transmit the Wangchuan tradition. At the same time, they also documented interactions with local practitioners through photos and videos. Lyu Qin, Director of Xiamen Tong'an Lyucuo Wangchuan Transmission Center, demonstrated the construction of the ceremonial boat, while Xue Huiping from Diaocao Wangchuan Folk Culture Center in Siming District explained the Tanka community's unique maritime memorial customs for honoring their ancestors.
During the sharing session, participants utilized firsthand materials, including photographs and videos, to exchange learning experiences. In group discussions, participants from both countries drafted preliminary joint safeguarding plans for the Wangchuan Ceremony and Lion Dance.

Originating in southern Fujian and transmitted to Malacca, the Wangchuan Ceremony embodies coastal communities' reverence for the ocean and their wisdom in fostering harmonious coexistence between people and the sea. Jointly nominated by China and Malaysia, this element was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020, serving as a model for bottom-up safeguarding efforts. The Lion Dance, which spread from China throughout Southeast Asia, has become a shared cultural memory. China and Malaysia are currently collaborating on its nomination for UNESCO's Representative List. These heritage elements represent not only historical memory but also serve as vital carriers of contemporary cultural identity and diversity, bearing witness to the enduring spirit of the Maritime Silk Road. Participants noted that the workshop facilitated active exchanges of safeguarding experiences and achievements while fostering new opportunities for cooperation.

The success of this workshop contributes to deepening participating communities' understanding of the Convention's guiding principles, building ICH safeguarding capacities, and putting into action the consensus reached by leaders of both countries on deepening people-to-people exchanges, marking a meaningful step towards building a high-level strategic China-Malaysia community with a shared future.
