On July 5, 2024, the "Workshop on Engaging Youths in Preparation of Community Driven Safeguarding Plans" concluded successfully in Tailevu Province, Fiji. This program was co-organized by CRIHAP and the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage & Arts of the Republic of Fiji. The training aimed to enhance the capability of Fijian youth to assist their communities in developing ICH protection plans, gain a better understanding of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and its implementation at the national level, and support Fiji's efforts in raising awareness and building capacity for ICH protection. UNESCO ICH trainer Sipiriano Nemani was invited to conduct lectures and guidance.

The Deputy Minister of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage, and Arts attended and delivered a speech. He expressed gratitude to CRIHAP for its support of the training program and emphasized that this training marks a significant starting point for the preservation and transmission of Fiji's ICH. He highlighted the urgent need to enhance ICH protection and transmission, particularly in rural areas rich in ICH resources, to attract tourists, hoping to learn from China's experience in these aspects.

Ms. Han Xiaoyan, Director of the China Cultural Center in Fiji, attended the opening ceremony on behalf of CRIHAP and introduced Fiji to the significant achievements China has made in the field of ICH transmission in recent years.

Mr. Zhang Jing, Director-General of CRIHAP, delivered a written speech, and Li Jiangyi read it on behalf of him at the opening ceremony. Mr. Zhang Jing stated: "I am pleased that this workshop focuses on the youth of Fiji. ICH is passed down through generations, and its protection will be in the hands of the young people. I believe the theme and content of this training are very meaningful and am confident that the young participants will take on the responsibility and put more effort into the protection of Fiji's ICH. Traditional dances are undoubtedly treasures of Fiji, and the training will discuss and propose protective measures, providing valuable experience for other ICH projects."

The training focused on the theme 'Fijian Youth Assisting Communities in Developing ICH Protection Plans,' with a particular emphasis on Fijian traditional dance Meke and hymns. It included classroom lectures and group discussions to impart knowledge within the framework of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The four-day training was held in-person from July 2 to 5 in Nataleira Village, Dawasamu District, Tailevu Province, Fiji, with 45 participants.
