As an environmentally friendly traditional Chinese silk fabric, gambiered canton gauze’s manmade plant dying and finishing technique enjoys a history of more than 500 years. Gambiered canton gauze uses pure natural silk as its grey fabrics, and wild growing herbs in Southern China, dye yam, as its dyestuff. Its dying and finishing process goes through 14 steps including yam juicing, soaking, basking, and painting with river mud. It feels stiff and smooth, of good fastness and strong waterproof, easy to wash and dry, and durable, and also good for the skin as it is anti-allergy and itching. The garments made of it rustle in the movement, so it is also called rustling gauze in Chinese or aromatic gauze, as rustling and aromatic pronounce the same in Chinese. Its ancient and traditional making technique has been valued and safeguarded by the Government and the cultural community. Gambiered canton gauze dyeing and finishing technique was inscribed on the second batch of China’s National ICH List in June, 2006.
