Focusing on the role of the media in raising awareness about safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage (ICH), the Sub-Regional Meeting for Intangible Cultural Heritage Safeguarding in Northeast Asia was held on 9-12, October, 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The meeting was co-organised by UNESCO Beijing Office in coordination with the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO and the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP). Ms Himalchuli GURUNG, Programme Specialist for Culture of UNESCO Beijing Office, Mr Yo. OTGONBAYAR, Vice-Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Sports of Mongolia and Mr Kwon HUH, Director-General of ICHCAP attended the opening ceremony and made opening remarks. Over 40 participants were invited to the meeting, among which delegates from People’s Republic of China, Japan, Republic Of Korea, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Mongolia and Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) gave presentations. Participants introduced the safeguarding measures and plans taken by the states parties in the framework of 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (herein after referred to as the Convention), especially the significant role of the media played in raising public awareness about ICH safeguarding, and discussed about how to establish cooperation among the regional countries for ICH safeguarding by media and network. Participants also introduced the ways to produce and broadcast video programmes on ICH elements and the safeguarding in their own countries, sharing their successful experience and cases. Some of the participants elaborated the number of media agencies which were involved in the ICH safeguarding videos producing in their country and the challenges that they were confronted with.
